Today’s students need connection, and to experience the joy of a dynamic relationship with God that gives meaning to their lives. They need to know what God’s purposes are for this world and how God is working to accomplish them. They need to be part of the great work God is doing, and they need adult Christians to walk beside them.
Do you serve with youth in grades 7-12? Do you have a passion for passing on to them the importance of developing a missions lifestyle? Youth on Mission helps equip students to be dynamic, relevant, caring witnesses for Christ. Missions discipleship starts with God’s presence in a person’s life, which is why Youth on Mission is so important.
Through Youth on Mission students can:
learn to discover God in their everyday experiences
go beyond the ordinary in their relationship with God
experience God for Who He is
be witnesses to God’s faithfulness
participate in God’s awesome work in His world
develop a Christian worldview
Students in Youth on Mission have experiences to connect with God’s presence, power and purpose!
Youth on Mission offers opportunities not only for growth in relationships with God, but also with peers. It helps students learn they can be part of God’s work in the world, and allows the church to provide a coed missions discipleship process.
Who Leads Youth on Mission?
Adults who love students and missions help make Youth on Mission happen. Since it's for both guys and girls, a balance of adult men and women leaders is important. If your church has a Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU), initial planning should be done through the director and leadership team. However, it is not necessary to have a formal WMU organization to begin Youth on Mission, any youth leader can incorporate Youth on Mission into the existing youth ministry - we are here to help with resources. Adult leaders should be available to listen, gather input from students, coordinate member responsibilities and guide the work. The planning team also works cooperatively with the student minister, other youth leaders and church missions leaders as available. Adult leaders should be members of the church.
A great Youth on Mission group needs excellent adult leaders, but adults are not expected to do all the work. In fact, they should never do all the work! Planning, coordinating, organizing, participating and evaluating are all part of the valuable learning experiences students need as they grow in
using their gifts,
becoming mature Christ-followers and
finding God’s direction and call for their lives.
Adult leaders coordinate with church missions leaders, partner with youth in getting students involved and involving students in planning and doing the ministry. They can
get to know students and pray for them
look for ways students can minister through the church and in the community
look for special events and mission trips
help students grow as Christ-followers
